How to Remove EXIF Data from Photos
A photo carries more than its visible pixels. Cameras and phones attach metadata describing when the image was captured, which device made it and which settings were used, and some images also carry geographic coordinates. All of that is useful for organizing a photo library. It is rarely useful on a marketplace listing, a work sample or a public post.
What EXIF data can contain
EXIF is a metadata format used with common image formats. Depending on the device and the software, its fields can include the camera make and model, capture date, orientation, exposure time, aperture, focal length, ISO, image dimensions and GPS coordinates. Editing applications add their own on top, such as software names, keywords or authorship fields. Not every photo carries every field, and an exported or downloaded copy may already have some of it stripped.
Clean a copy, not your archive
Capture dates and camera settings can be valuable later, particularly in a personal photo library. Keep the original as your archive and make a separate copy for sharing.
Working on a copy also protects you from an orientation surprise. Some older images store the camera rotation as metadata instead of rotating the pixel data itself, so stripping the tag without applying it first can leave a photo sideways. A good export process bakes the visible orientation in before discarding anything.
How to create a clean sharing copy
- Open the photo in the Image Metadata Remover.
- Check that the preview has the orientation and appearance you expect.
- Create the cleaned version and download it under a new filename.
- Leave the source photo untouched until you have verified the exported copy.

Verify instead of assuming
Reopen the downloaded file in an inspector and check the fields that actually matter to you. File-information panels on desktop systems show basic metadata, and specialist utilities enumerate EXIF, IPTC and XMP fields in full. This step earns its keep for location-sensitive photos, and for any workflow that passes the image through another editor afterwards, because that editor may add its own software or author metadata on export.
Metadata removal is not visual redaction
Cleaning metadata does nothing about information visible in the picture itself. Street signs, house numbers, badges, screens, reflections and distinctive landmarks all stay in the pixels. Crop the sensitive edges with the Image Cropper and inspect the full frame at a large size before you share it. Blurring can be reversible when applied too lightly, so for text that must not get out, opaque covering or careful cropping is the safer move.
Choose the export format deliberately
Re-exporting can change the file format or the compression level. A pre-sharing checklist
- Keep the original photo private.
- Work on a separate cleaned copy.
- Check the orientation, the crop and any visible detail you missed.
- Inspect the exported file for metadata you thought was gone.
- Share the copy you verified, not the source file.
